Finding your way around the site

On the left hand side of every page is a grey menu which lists the section you are in and the categories within that section. These categories can be clicked on to view information.

To assist you with moving back and forth between the pages there is a "bread crumb" trail at the top of each page - this starts with 'Home:' so you can see the path you have followed to reach your destination and use it to revisit previous pages, (or you may prefer to use your web browser's back button or use the alt key + back arrow on your keyboard).

Looking for information

There are four ways that you can find information on this website:

1. The home page

This is the starting point of any website and a good place to begin browsing the site for information.
The web address (called URL) of St Albans is www.stalbans.gov.uk and when you click on this web address, it is the homepage that will display on your screen.

Once you start to look at different parts of the site, if you want to return to the homepage, just click on the word 'Home' in the grey menu or click on the St Albans Council logo in the top left hand corner. Alternatively press alt + 1 + enter on your keyboard.

2. Search

Use the search box to type in your own word(s) and carry out a search for the word(s) on the website. The search box can be found in the top right hand corner of every page.

The St Albans search page will allow a user to search the Council’s website, download documents from the site or present results from the County Council’s website. When undertaking a search, it is best to use one or two key words rather than a long sentence.

3. A - Z

The A-Z is another way for finding information on the site. The new AtoZ will not only provide a user with a list of information relating to St Albans Council, but also a list of those service provided by the County County such as Adoption, Schools, etc.

Click on the first initial letter of the service you require. For example, if you want to find information on planning applications, you may choose to click on the letter 'P' for planning, or perhaps 'A' for applications.

4. Site map - Sitemap

Some people like to use a site map to get an overview of all the main areas of a website. Our site map can be located by clicking on the words 'Sitemap' that appear at the top of every page.
