St Albans Benefit section is committed to ensuring that Housing and Council Tax Benefit are paid to the right people at the right time. This is because benefit fraud costs the country millions of pounds.
If you are claiming either of these benefits you must provide proof to support your application
When do you need to provide Proof
Every time you claim or re-apply for benefit it is essential that you provide proof to support your application, even if your circumstances have not changed.

What do you need to provide
Below are the four main categories:
Identity
Savings and Capital
Income
Rent Liability
Please note - We can only accept original documents, photocopies are not acceptable

Identity (examples of acceptable items)
Birth/Marriage Certificates
Benefit Payment Books
Pension Books
Driving Licences
Medical Cards
Passport/Identity cards EC countries/Immigration Papers
Full Bank Statements
National Insurance number cards
Before we are able to calculate your benefit we will need to see a document showing yours and any partners National Insurance Number.
If you are unable to do this you may be asked to provide two items to prove your identity.

Savings and Capital
Full Bank/Building Society statements or passbooks. These must be current and show at least two full months transactions. (We do not accept any Mini or balance statements)
Proof of ownership of dividend statements, bonds, unit trusts, stocks and shares, land and property.

Income
Wage slips – these must be current, to show the last two months, five weeks or three fortnights earnings
A certificate of earnings from your employer – (please ask us if you wish us to send a blank form)
Welfare benefit award letters
Letters (to confirm other income, such as maintenance payments)
Recent self employed accounts
Self employed pro-forma – (please ask us if you wish us to send a blank form)

Rent Liability
You must supply proof of your rent liability unless you are a council tenant
Current tenancy agreement, which has not expired
Letter from your Landlord, confirming the rent charged, and services included
Letter from Letting Agent (if applicable)
