Highways
The responsibility for treating ice and snow on the highways, including both the roadway and the footway rests with the local Highway Authority, Hertfordshire County Council. Coordination with district councils and other organisations during the winter

St Albans City and District Council voluntarily assists the Highway Authority by deploying available resources to assist in the clearance of priority footways. The Council does not have the capability to treat the roadways in the District.

Hertfordshire Highways Fault Reporting.

Comments on Winter Service can be made to Hertfordshire Highways by visiting their website fault reporting page  or by calling their Customer Service Centre on 03001234047.This service can be used to report ice and snow on the road or footway, request a salt bin or to report missing, damaged or empty salt bins. You are advised to select Winter Maintenance from the drop down menu.

Council Property

St Albans City & District Council is responsible for the treatment of snow and ice on land under its ownership and control. In addition to clearing the footways the Council strives to treat the following areas:

Public Toilets
Parks and Cemeteries
Sports and Leisure Facilities

Private Property

The responsibility for maintaining private streets rests with the owners to whom any defect should be reported. A private street is one that is not maintained by the Council.
