Refuse and Recycling collections in winter weather.

Refuse collection in the snow

Refuse and recycling

Updated:  Mon 13 February, 09:25

The waste and recycling crews are out as usual today.Collections in a few roads were affected by snow last week.  Roads where access was not possible are listed at www.stalbans.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling.  Please leave your bins and boxes out; we will return to collect them as soon as possible.

We will be making every effort to keep services going this winter.  Icy roads and footpaths, however, can be dangerous for our crews when pulling heavy bins and loading vehicles and also when manoeuvring our 26 tonne vehicles safely and it may be necessary to make changes to your collection day.

The decision to make the collection or to suspend it is taken at a senior level immediately before the collections are due to start. Where necessary, crews remain on standby, working on snow clearance, in case collections can resume later that day.

The Council aims to help avoid rubbish piling up in the streets during prolonged periods of snow and ice.

If the disruption lasts 1 - 2 days, we will operate a catch up policy with collections rolling on one day until we catch up.  Crews will work on Saturdays until the backlog is cleared.

If disruption is severe and lasts 3 days or more, green waste collections will be suspended for those areas that were missed and all black and green waste will be collected together and sent to landfill.  Recycling box collections are not included - these will be emptied on the next scheduled collection day, weather permiting.

You may prefer not to put out your green bin until the next scheduled collection so the contents can be composted instead.
