Life doesn't always run smoothly, but there are a number of government agencies and other organisations that can help in a time of crisis.

Crime

Community Safety

St Albans District Council is committed to Community Safety. We run a number of Community Safety Schemes and Projects in conjunction with the Police and other partners. You can find out further information on our Community Safety initiatives.

Crime Prevention

There are a number of practical ways you can help prevent becoming a victim of crime.

The Crime Reduction website has lots of useful information on crime prevention. A Home and Property Security section has details on how to beat the burglar, and advice for when you are away. The Personal Safety section advises how to remain safe at home and when out and about.

For information on how you and your neighbours can work together to prevent crime, visit the Neighbourhood Watch website.

You can register your mobile phone with the The Mobile Equipment National Database (M-E-N-D). If the police or other organisations recover your phone after loss or theft, you will be notified by M-E-N-D. Further details on the scheme can be found on the M-E-N-D website.

 

Victims of Crime

Being a victim of crime can be a very traumatic experience.

Victim Support helps people cope with the effects of crime. Information about Victim Support and how to receive support and assistance can be found on the Victim Support website.

The Criminal Justice System website has information for victims of crime including how to report a crime, compensation, how to protect yourself and victim support.

The Community Legal Service website contains information and links on the rights of victims.

Illness

You can search for your local dentist, doctor, hospital, support services, pharmacies, as well as other health related information on the Health pages of the St Albans District website.

Family and Marriage Problems

You can find a directory of marriage support services compiled by the Lord Chancellor's Department.

Relate is the UK's largest and most experienced relationship counselling organisation. Further information on the services they offer can be found on the Relate website.

Domestic Violence

The Woman's Aid website has information on domestic violence, your legal rights, and how to find a refuge.

The Home Office website publishes the Government Policy on Domestic Violence, along with a list of publications and useful links on domestic violence.

The BBC "Hitting Home" website has information, help and support for anyone affected by domestic violence.

Trouble at Work

Information on your rights and legislation on the workplace can be found on the Department of Trade and Industry website.

Discrimination and Racial Abuse

The Commission for Racial Equality website provides information and advice to people who think they have suffered racial discrimination or harassment.

The Equal Opportunities Commission aims to eliminate sex discrimination in Britain. The Equal Opportunities Commission website contains advice on your rights, as well as information to help employers and individuals.

The Home Office website also has lots of useful information on Race Equality and Diversity.
