It is always worth checking to see if you qualify for benefits, especially if you are on a low income or have been made redundant. Even if you have applied for benefits in the past and been refused, your circumstances or the rules on eligibility may have now changed.

Council managed benefits

The Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit schemes are administered by St Albans City and District Council on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.

Central Government benefits

  • Directgov provides information on benefits and financial support.
  • Income Support benefit may be payable if you are not available for full-time work and do not have enough money to live on.
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance is the main benefit if you are of working age and are out of work.
  • Homeowners Mortgage Support may be available if you are having difficulties paying your mortgage.
  • Tax Credits are payments from the government, for which you may qualify if you are responsible for at least one child or young person who normally lives with you, or if you are working and earning low pay.
  • If you are on a low income you may qualify for a variety of benefits and allowances.
