If you are struggling to pay your mortgage or rent or you have been made homeless and are looking for somewhere to live, then there are a number of organisations that can offer you guidance and support.

Advice and support

  • St Albans City and District Council provides advice and assistance on a range of issues including homelessness and housing for people on low incomes.
  • Directgov explains what you should do if you can’t meet your mortgage payments and has information on the financial support that is available.
  • Community Legal Advice is a service that provides free legal advice on housing problems, among other issues.

Homelessness

  • Our website explains what your rights are if you have been made or are being threatened with homelessness.
  • Shelter is a housing and homelessness charity that provides advice on housing issues, including homelessness and dealing with mortgage and rent arrears.
  • Herts Young Homeless Group offers advice and support about benefits, training, employment and housing to young people aged 16 to 25 years.
  • The YMCA provides safe, secure and affordable supported housing for young people.

Benefits and assistance

  • Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit schemes are administered by St Albans City and District Council on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.
