When money is tight, it is always worthwhile analysing your monthly outgoings and working out where you can cut back or save on costs by switching to a cheaper provider. Saving energy in the home and reducing food waste will also help you to control your overheads.

Price comparison

  • Consumer Focus campaigns for a fair deal for consumers. The website contains information on reducing gas and electricity bills, billing basics, finding the right deal for you, changing supplier, debt advice and other free services.
  • Price comparison websites can help you compare the different offerings from domestic electricity and gas suppliers.

Reducing energy costs

  • Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit organisation that will help you to save energy in the home.
  • The Warm Front Scheme is a government-funded initiative that provides grants for insulation and heating improvements if you are in receipt of certain benefits.
  • The Home Heat Helpline is a free not-for-profit phone line set up to help energy users who are having difficulties paying their fuel bills and keeping warm.

Recycling waste

  • The Love Food Hate Waste campaign aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. Its website contains recipes, tips and tools to help you reduce food waste (and therefore money).
  • To help you get the most from St Albans City and District’s recycling service we have built a new website which explains how you can recycle your waste.
