If you have recently been made redundant and are searching for employment or looking to retrain; fear you may lose your job and want to know what rights you may have; or you are an employer looking to recruit or retrain staff, then the following links may be useful.

Unemployment and redundancy

  • The Citizen's Advice Bureau can help you understand your employment rights and give advice on the benefits you could be entitled to if you have lost your job.
  • Directgov offers advice on:
    • the redundancy procedure and calculating redundancy payments, and 
    • the benefits you are entitled to if you are looking for a job, such as Jobseeker's Allowance.
  • Community Legal Advice provides information and legal advice regarding redundancy, unfair dismissal and discrimination.

Employment and careers

  • Directgov provides advice on searching for a job and planning a career.
  • Next Step offers advice on choosing a career or course and help with finding a job, developing your CV and completing job application forms. Call 0800 100 900.
  • JobCentre Plus provides help and support for those looking for work and employers looking for staff.
  • Connexions Direct provides information and advice to young people, including career guidance.
  • The Centre for Voluntary Service provides volunteering opportunities to help you improve your skills and get back into the workplace.
  • DisabledGo provides a job service for the disabled and helps encourage partnerships with inclusive employers.

Training and development

  • Direct Gov provides advice on education and learning so you can improve your skills for work.
  • Train to Gain offers funding and support to employers in training their employees.
  • The Open University has launched a new initiative to help you 'Re-launch' your career and outsmart the recession by updating your skills.
  • University of Hertfordshire offers a variety of courses to help you advance your career.
  • Oaklands College provides a number of practical courses to help you unlock your potential in the workplace. The college also runs the Executive Forum which offers support and advice to those who have been made redundant from high-level jobs. 
  • West Herts College provides a variety of courses that equip students with workplace skills.
  • Adult learning in Hertfordshire.
  • The Prince's Trust helps young people with training, skill building, business loans and personal development.
