St Albans City and District's economy is dominated by a large number of small businesses. The local economy has about 30 employers with over 100 staff. Many of these larger busineses are known nationally and globally, especially within the management consultancy, business and financial sectors. Local businesses in the District include, Deloitte, AECOM, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Premier Foods and Hewitt.
Two major world class centres of excellence specialising in environmental issues are located in the District - Rothamsted Research and the Building Research Establishment (BRE).
Latest employment data (Annual Business Inquiry 2008) shows there are 67,600 jobs in the District. Banking and Finance accounts for 36%, the Public accounts for 23% and Distribution which includes retail, hotels and catering account for 22%. The manufacturing sector in St Albans account for 3% of local jobs.
