  * Watch Your Step

Pedestrian slipping and tripping is the most common cause of injuries in the UK workplace. Each year slips and trips cause over 11,000 major injuries, over 80% of which result in fractures. Over 90% of those injured are absent from work for at least one week. The cost of these accidents to the UK economy and employers have been estimated at £800 million and £500 million respectively.

Sectors with the highest reported incidence of major injuries include construction, public administration, food, health services, transport and warehousing, postal services, retail and hospitality. Almost all slips happen when floors are wet or dirty (e.g. contaminated with water, oil, food debris, dust etc.) If the floor has a smooth surface (for example the surfaces of standard vinyl, glazed ceramic tiles, varnished wood and some metal floors are all often very smooth) even a tiny amount of contamination can present a real slip problem.

Trips generally take place on damaged, uneven and badly laid floors or because obstacles have been left where people do not expect to find them. As part of the 'Watch Your Step' Campaign St Albans City & District Council is working in partnership with the HSE to help reduce the accidents involving slips, trips and falls within the workplace.

During September 2006 as part of the Slips, Trips and falls initiative the health & safety team at St Albans City & District Council will be focusing during their inspections on catering premises. Environmental Health Officers will be visiting premises to give verbal advice and provide advisory leaflets on the prevention of slips and trips within the workplace. Please contact your local Environmental Health Department to find out about any initiative they may be running in your local area.

For more information about the 'Watch Your step' Campaign can be found at www.stalbans.gov.uk or www.hse.gov.uk on or contact the Health & Safety team at St Albans City & District Council 01727 819261.
