The Council takes pride in being at the forefront of promoting equality of opportunity as an employer, service provider and a procurer of goods and services. We strive to tackle all forms of discrimination and achieve equality irrespective of ones age, disability, gender, ethnicity, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation.
Single Equality Scheme
All public bodies are required to proactively promote equality of opportunity, eliminate unlawful discrimination and promote good relations between groups. They are also required to highlight how they will do this by producing and publishing a race, disability and gender equality scheme setting out how they will meet the general and specific duties.
To demonstrate our commitment to equality and diversity, the Council is in the process of developing a Single Equality Scheme incorporating the requirements of the existing duties but also extending this to age, religion or belief and sexual orientation equality.
The scheme will need to reflect the needs of our service users and we will therefore be developing it in consultation with our customers, partners, Members and staff. The consultation will take place in early 2010 with a view to publishing our Single Equality Scheme in spring 2010.
We have recently undertaken a review of all our policies and services, assessing their relevance against the six equality strands to inform the departmental and Corporate Equality Impact Assessment programme for the next three years (2009 / 2012).
