St. Albans City & District Council believes that every individual has a right to be treated with dignity and respect and to live without fear of discrimination. The Council condemns all forms of discrimination, and will not tolerate such acts whether perpetrated by members of the community, Council housing tenants, or Council employees.
The council is committed to tackling all hate crime based on people’s race, gender, disability, sexuality, religion, faith and belief by creating a culture whereby discrimination real or perceived, is challenged and eradicated.
The Council has a statutory responsibility to provide data on the number of racial incidents reported and those which result in further action. Within the Council this information is required to be reported quarter-yearly by each department to the Equalities Officer, and annually to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
St. Albans City & District Council’s first Corporate Aim is to build a community that is open, fair and inclusive. In support of this Aim the Council strives to:
• Ensure that all hate related incidents involving the Council are reported.
• Seek a sensitive victim-focused approach in all reported incidents, offering support and advice to those affected.
• Take action against the perpetrators of reported incidents through working in partnership with all relevant agencies, for example the police.
