The Chapel, Hatfield Road Cemetery

We aim to provide a professional and caring service through our sympathetic, competent and trained staff. Our priority is to ensure that all funerals are conducted in a dignified and orderly manner.

We understand that a meaningful funeral is an important part of the grieving process, and recognise that each person’s needs are different. We will endeavour to make every funeral as personal and unhurried as possible.

The cemeteries are peaceful places of great historical interest, which offer a natural environment for all types of wildlife and are, as a result, an important nature conservation resource. This Council is part of the Local Agenda 21 (Think Global, Act Local) and works in partnership with the Hertfordshire Wildlife Trust.

The Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) produced the Charter for the Bereaved specifically to improve cemeteries and funerals. A  copy of the Charter is available from the Cemetery Office upon request. The Charter sets out national, clearly defined rights, standards and expectations. St Albans City and District Council adopted the Charter in October 1997. The Council has a statutory obligation to provide, regulate, maintain and repair cemeteries and register burials under the Local Government Act 1972 and the Local Authorities Cemeteries Order 1977.

The cemeteries are maintained by the City and District of St Albans in partnership with John O'Conner Ltd.
