Fano is the most recent of the City and District's twin towns, with the link established in 1998. The formal twinning protocol was signed by the Mayors of the City and District, and Fano in October 1998 (in Fano) and July 1999 (in St Albans).
In that short time there have been civic exchanges, visits between the friendship associations, a visit by a trade delegation from Fano, and even a junior version of 'Euro 2000' in which London Colney Colts Football Club competed in Fano in a very enjoyable and friendly tournament. This was so successful that the event is being repeated annually.
Fano is a resort town on the east coast of Italy, close to Rimini and Ancona, which have airports for easy access. It has two beautiful beaches, and is a fishing port with a colourful harbour. A Carnival is held over several weekends in February each year, where sweets are thrown from floats to the enthusiastic crowds.
Fano has an important Roman heritage, which gives it an obvious link with the City and District of St Albans. This heritage led to links between the museums services in the City and District and Fano which, with the strong support of the significant Italian community in St Albans, developed into a full town twinning between the City and District, and Fano.
The St Albans-Fano Friendship Association (SAFFA) organises exchanges between the City and District and Fano, and undertake activities to promote the twinning link. Details of their current activities can be obtained by contacting:
