Local governments are managed by councillors who are appointed by public elections on a regular schedule, in much the same way as County Councillors and Members of Parliament.
You can only vote in elections if your name is on the Register of Electors.

St Albans City & District Council
Local council elections are held each year over a 4 year cycle. Years 1-3 are for elections to the District Council which elects by thirds (ie. one third of Councillors are voted in each year) with elections to the County Council being held in the 4th year of the cycle. Hertfordshire County Council
Hertfordshire County Council currently has 77 councillors elected from the County to make decisions about county-wide decisions (such as education and social services). St Albans currently has 10 county councillors who serve for four years.
Parliament
The District Council organises the elections for the St Albans, and Hitchin and Harpenden Parliamentary Constituencies. There are two Members of Parliament representing the constituencies within the district. Parliamentary elections are held on a date decided by the Prime Minister, it must be within 5 years of the last general election.
The member of parliament for St. Albans is Anne Main (Conservative) and the member for Hitchin and Harpenden is Peter Lilley (Conservative). (External Links open in a new window)
