Now is the time to make sure you are on the electoral register in time for the forthcoming General Election and the next local election.
St Albans City and District Council maintains a register of electors and is currently sending out registration forms to all households within the district. If you have changed your name, address, or become eligible to vote for the first time, please let us know on the form. By completing and returning the form, you will be making sure that you can have your say on what matters to you in your district. The form collects the information we need to publish a revised register, which we do on 1st December
Mike Lovelady, the returning officer at the District Council commented: “It’s simple to register. All you have to do is complete the annual canvass form that will be delivered to your door at the end of August and return it to the council offices in the reply paid envelope. You can also reply by ringing the FREEPHONE voter registration line: 0808 161 7660 which is available around the clock or online at www.register-online.co.uk. However you will need to have the unique reference number that will be on your canvass form to allow you to do this. By completing the canvass form your name will appear on the new register enabling you to choose the people who will make decisions that affect your everday life.”
Cllr Anthony Rowlands commented: “Residents are not automatically entitled to vote just because they pay council tax or have voted before – it is necessary to register. Make sure nothing stops you from having your say on who represents you.”
By law, the registration form is required to be completed and returned from all households. Returning the form quickly will help to keep down costs and reduce the number of reminders that will otherwise have to be sent out.
