The famous St Albans Pancake Day Race, now sponsored by McDougalls the home baking brand, took place at noon on Shrove Tuesday, 24th February, 2009.
The Mayor Cllr Bert Pawle who is from Harpenden, was delighted to present the prize pan to the winning team, Billy's Bar and Restaurant, also from Harpenden. 2nd and 3rd places went to two teams from the District Council: the Leisure department and SADC Projects.
Last year's winners, the Planning Boys, who thought they'd won, were disqualified at the last minute for not stopping to toss their pancake.
McDougalls has a long history with pancake day: since 1864, consumers have been turning to the reliable quality of their market leading flours to make delicious pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.
McDougalls will help raise support for pancake day, supplying gifts and goodies for contestants, providing great recipes, topping ideas and coupons for all the crowd.
McDougalls who are proud to be supporting the local community, is owned by Premier Foods PLC, who are based in at the bottom of Holywell Hill, St Albans. Last year's race was full of energetic competition and rivalry.
Cllr Melvyn Teare, portfolio holder for culture and heritage said: "We are delighted that this year's Pancake race is going to be sponsored by McDougalls. We are always pleased for local companies to be involved with local events, and for a home baking company to sponsor a pancake race does seem a rather fitting match."
