Kubrick: A Film Maker’s Odyssey. Museum of St Albans: 2 Apr–5 Sept

The exhibition of material from the Kubrick Archive, much of which has never been seen before by the public, was officially opened by the Mayor Cllr Chris Oxley.

The Mayor met with Jan Harlan, film producer and brother-in-law of Stanley Kubrick. Jan acted as Kubrick's executive producer for Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and was an assistant to the producer for A Clockwork Orange (1971). Harlan was also executive producer for Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001). Harlan directed Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures (2001).

Christiane Kubrick is also pictured with the Mayor. She and Kubrick married in 1958 shortly after filming Paths of Glory (by Stanley Kubrick), in which she was credited as Susanne Christian. The marriage lasted until Kubrick's death in 1999. The Kubrick family moved to England in the 1960s where Christiane continued to paint and exhibit. She became highly accomplished and avidly collected artist with a passion for floral settings and still-lifes. Her works were featured in two Stanley Kubrick films.*

Don’t miss the opportunity to see the wide range of fascinating items, many on show for the first time. Stand next to the monolith like the one used in “2001, A Space Odyssey”, see props and equipment used on set.

Christiane Kubrick
* In A Clockwork Orange, a large floral oil painting adorns the living room of "Home", the abode of reclusive writer Frank Alexander and his wife during the famous "Singin' in the Rain" scene. In Eyes Wide Shut, Christiane's vivid paintings adorn nearly every wall of Dr and Mrs Hartford's (Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman) New York City apartment. A few paintings by her daughter Katherina are also shown. Her paintings are also featured in various rooms of Ziegler's NYC mansion (billiard room and upstairs bathroom).

Christiane continues to live in England, where she and her daughter Katharina hold regular painting courses at their home in Hertfordshire. She and her brother Jan Harlan are very active in preservation, exhibit production and publishing related to her husband's life work, including the recent Taschen mega-book "The Stanley Kubrick Archives" and the currently touring major museum exhibit.

Stanley Kubrick is probably the region’s most distinguished film maker. Based near St Albans for much of his working life, Kubrick made 12 feature films which earned him a reputation as one of the leading film directors of his generation.

Kubrick’s films include:
2001, A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
Dr. Strangelove
Eyes Wide Shut
