Jeff Smyth, markets officer commented: “I am full of appreciation for the St Albans City and District Council’s market workforce, who came out in the freezing cold weather at 3.30am on Wednesday 6th to start erecting the market stalls, so that all the traders who were able to come in had stalls waiting for them, enabling them to trade. They do a truly tremendous job as they are out before anyone else is on the road, working in dark and truly challenging conditions – they are the unsung heroes.

“In order to ensure the Saturday Market and the Farmers Market can go ahead this weekend, they have left the shells of the market stalls up and will put the top covers and lighting in place each morning.

The market stall holders who managed to come in (who are pictured here), also expressed their gratitude for the staff and the customers who came to buy their goods despite the weather.”
