The Mayor for St Albans City and District, Cllr Aislinn Lee, joins volunteers and staff from Sure-Start St Albans and St Albans and Hertsmere Women’s Refuge (SAHWR) on market stall

St Albans City and District Mayor, Cllr Aislinn Lee helped volunteers and supporters from Sure-Start St Albans and St Albans and Hertsmere Women’s Refuge (SAHWR) raise the profile of the charities by joining them on a market stall in St Albans on Wednesday, 5 July.
The Mayor has chosen to help raise funds for the two charities during her mayoral year and offered them the opportunity to take a market stall in St Albans to distribute information to local residents about the organisations.
The Mayor, Cllr Aislinn Lee said: “These two charities play an important role in the local community providing care and support to families. The market stall helped the charities make more people aware of the good work that they do.”
Events will be held throughout the year to help raise funds for the charities culminating in the Mayor’s Ball in the spring of 2012.
Sure-Start St Albans runs ten children’s centres across the District, providing access to local support and services for families and carers of children under five years of age. Teresa Matcham, a centre manager for one of Sure-Start’s centres said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to raise our profile in the wider community. Our centres welcome families with young children. We are committed to providing the best possible outcomes for all children. This is achieved by working in partnership with parents in a variety of ways.”
The Mayor’s other charity, St Albans and Hertsmere Women's Refuge, provides a service to women and children fleeing domestic abuse. The refuge accommodates up to 22 families who stay for up to three months in the emergency accommodation and for up to two years in the ‘move on’ accommodation. The manager of the refuge, Liz Perry, said: “This stall has provided us with a fabulous opportunity to raise the profile of the refuge and having the Mayor’s support is invaluable.”
