The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Aislinn Lee, has been treated to a preview of an award-winning garden ahead of a charity Open Day on Sunday, 10 July.

The Mayor was given a guided tour of the garden at 19 Lancaster Road, St Albans by owners, Mr Michael Foers and his wife Pauline.

Last year the couple won Best Senior Citizen Garden in the St Albans District in Bloom Awards 2010.

They are opening their garden to the public on Sunday, 10 July, from 2pm to 5.30pm, as part of the National Garden Scheme, also know as Yellow Book gardens.

Entry to the Open Day is £3 for adults and free for children. There will be plants for sale as well as tea and cakes. All the money raised will go to charities chosen by the National Garden Scheme.

The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Aislinn Lee, said: “I would urge everyone to pop along on Sunday to see this beautiful garden which has been lovingly created by Mr and Mrs Foers. You really need to take your time when looking round the garden because there is a lot to see with different planting arrangements to cover all the seasons. For example, there are more than 20 different varieties of snowdrops.”

Mr Foers said: “Last year the National Garden Scheme distributed more than £2.6 million to charities, with the beneficiaries including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Care and Help the Hospices. Please come along and visit our garden to support this charity fund-raising initiative.”

The St Albans District in Bloom competition is being run by St Albans City and District Council again this year. The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony later in the year.
