News release: 23 May 2011
The Mayor Cllr Aislinn Lee

At the Annual Council meeting on Wednesday 18 May, Councillor Aislinn Lee was elected Mayor of St Albans City and District and Councillor Geoff Harrison was elected to be her Deputy Mayor.
Family has always been very important to Aislinn and she regards the people that she serves as an extension of that family. It should not be surprising therefore, that her theme for her Mayoral year will be children and young people.
The Mayor’s charities are Sure-start St Albans and Women’s Refuge. In addition to these charities, she will establish a bursary to provide some limited financial support to children leaving care, to help them either to embark on a course at University or College, or to gain their independence by living in their own home. Aislinn believes that nothing is more natural than a family giving financial aid to their children when they first start out on their own. She feels that as a community St Albans should recognise, and take more responsibility for, the needs of children leaving care to let them know that they are valued members of our community, that we care how well they do and that we believe that they can succeed.

Aislinn has been involved in community politics for over forty years and a councillor for most of the last 21 years. She loves meeting people and says: “I am absolutely passionate about St Albans. We felt that we ‘came home’ when we moved here. It is a tremendous honour to be chosen as Mayor of anywhere, but to be chosen as Mayor of St Albans is doubly so. As first citizen of the City and District I love so much, representing the community I care so much about and having the opportunity to meet so many of the good people in St Albans who help on a daily basis to make our community the very best place to live for us all, is a once in a life time opportunity which I hope to fulfil with gusto, energy and great pride. I will simply relish it.”
