Future plans for the waste management contract

At Cabinet on 1 November Councillor Chichester-Miles gave an update on the review of the waste management contract.

St Albans District has the 2nd highest recycling rate in Hertfordshire and the Council has set clear priorities for the future which are:-

• Developing proposals to achieve and exceed 60% recycling
• To provide high quality, value for money waste and recycling services
• Ensure the operation of effective street cleaning and graffiti removal
• Working with businesses, pubs and restaurants to encourage recycling, which will benefit businesses’ waste clearance costs, reducing what goes to landfill and helping the Council reach its targets

Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for Environmental commented: “The Council is currently working on an action plan based upon an assessment of the costs versus benefits and taking into account how the options can be funded in the current financial context.


“This will consist of various aspects including an awareness campaign, a review of budget, contract and best practice, and an audit of waste with a view to extending the types of materials that can be collected for recycling, extending recycling to schools, and the procurement of a new waste management contract in 2015.

“Whilst the current contract is performing well there are areas that require review and development in order to contribute fully to the Council’s priorities. The recycling service may require significant investment over the next few years if it is to achieve and exceed a 60% recycling rate.”
