The Mayor Cllr Aislinn Lee

Following the success of its inaugural year, nominations for this year’s Mayor’s Pride Awards are now open.

Cllr Aislinn Lee, The Right Worshipful the Mayor of St Albans City & District said: “During this year I have had the greatest honour and privilege of meeting people who make the city and district of St Albans, the special place that it is. To be given this opportunity to celebrate some of them publicly will certainly be one of the highlights of my mayoral year.”

The awards will uncover some of the fantastic work and generosity of spirit that people contribute to the local community. The Mayor is excited at the prospect of finding the winners from her mayoral year, which will be announced in April 2012. She also looks forward to sharing the occasion with local people and celebrating the achievements of some of the area’s most deserving residents.

The Mayor continued: “We all know someone or some group we look at and admire for the energy, enthusiasm and commitment they contribute to the community, but how often do we get the opportunity to recognise them publicly and acknowledge the work they do for others selflessly? This is your opportunity to thank people for the hard work and dedication they have shown towards others.”

A key theme of the awards will be to raise awareness of the Mayor’s charities:  Sure-start St Albans and St Albans and Hertsmere Women’s Refuge (SAHWR), with an opportunity to make a donation during the evening.

The Mayor would like to hear who YOU think deserves to be recognised and is looking for winners in the following categories:

• Local hero award.
• Young person of distinction.
• Inclusive communities award.
• Environmental champion of the year.
• Community oriented business of the year.
• Cultural innovation of the year.
• Community project of the year.
• Voluntary sector award.
• Community champion of the year.

You cannot nominate yourself, however you are welcome to nominate the organisation for which you work or volunteer.

Organised and delivered by St Albans City and District Council, in association with the Herts Advertiser and St Albans District Centre for Voluntary Service (CVS), The Mayor’s Pride Awards will honour and celebrate local people who have gone the extra mile for others or shown immense strength in the face of adversity. The initiative is an opportunity to extol the virtues of individuals; the unsung heroes and volunteers who would never seek praise for themselves, and also to commend achievements and examples set by local groups and organisations across the district.

Nominating is quick and easy. To put forward a person or a group that you think deserves a Mayor’s Pride Award, or for further information, visit the Council’s website: www.stalbans.gov.uk/mayorsprideawards. Alternatively, you can pick up a nomination form from a variety of community venues across the district.

Nominations close at 5pm Monday 19 December 2011.

The Mayor’s Pride Awards ceremony is a FREE event that will take place at the Alban Arena from 6.30pm on the 26 April 2012. Tickets are by reservation only. To book your seats, telephone the Alban Arena on: 01727 844488 or visit their website: www.alban-arena.co.uk/whats-on/
