The first stage in the rebuilding of the new Batchwood Golf and Tennis Centre by St Albans City and District Council is underway following the fire last month which destroyed the main building.
The Council has begun the process of appointing a project management and design team to oversee the development.
We are using the Office of Government Commerce’s (OGC) Framework Agreement, a quick and simple process with pre-agreed contract terms and conditions and competitive rates. This will help save time and enable us to get on with the rebuild quickly.
It is expected that Cabinet will consider appointing a preferred supplier as early as November.
Councillor Mike Wakely, Portfolio Holder for Sports and Leisure at St Albans City and District Council, said: “Cabinet is pleased to hear that the first steps in rebuilding Batchwood Golf and Tennis Centre are being taken and we hope to be able to appoint a project management and design team soon. In the meantime, demolition of the fire damaged main building began on 5 September. Once this has been completed, we plan to erect a tennis ‘airhall’ which will provide for three indoor tennis courts and allow some of the original tennis programme to be accommodated on the site again.”
To help keep users of the centre informed about alternative programming arrangements and progress on the rebuild we are producing regular newsletters. The first newsletter was issued this week and will be available on the Council’s website below. It provides the following updates:
A tennis ‘airhall’ will shortly be provided at Batchwood to provide for three indoor tennis courts. We are also in discussions with the Batchwood Tennis team to identify options for them to deliver their programme at other facilities nearby. More information is available by calling 01727 827667 and asking for extension 233.
Plans are also afoot to repair the damaged bowling green over the winter so that it is ready for the playing season next spring.
Golfers wishing to play on the course at Batchwood will soon be provided with a temporary reception area and toilet facilities. You can book a tee off time, by calling 01727 844250.
We are trying to relocate the squash league to other facilities close by. For more information on alternative facilities, please call 01727 819367.
Health and fitness
As the gym cannot be used due to a lack of a power supply and damage to the access route, we have arranged for members of the Batchwood Golf and Tennis Centre to use any of the Council’s other facilities as part of their existing membership. For more information, please call 01727 844250.
Toilet facilities and refreshments are being offered by the Batchwood Hall Nightclub for anyone to use.
