St Albans City and District Council’s Cabinet meeting on Thursday 19 July will consider transferring ownership of East Lane car park to Wheathampstead Parish Council.

The Parish Council has asked the District Council to transfer the car park together with adjoining land and public open space to the south side of East Lane.

The District Council is currently encouraging Town and Parish Councils to take on ownership of local assets as part of a strategy to put localism into practice. This follows the implementation of the Localism Act by the Government last year. The act aims to let communities have greater control over public assets in their area and to take on additional responsibilities for the management of local services.

Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism at St Albans City and District Council, said: “The Council has already transferred ownership of Batford Springs nature reserve, Lyddekker Park and Westfield Recreation Ground to Harpenden Town Council. We are now considering requests to transfer assets to Parish Councils, including St Stephens, Sandridge and London Colney.”

The meeting on Thursday 19 July will take place in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre, St Peter’s Street, St Albans. A webcast of the Cabinet meeting can be watched online on the Council’s website.

The agenda for the meeting is available on the Council’s website.
