School children will learn about safety in the home when they take part in real-life scenarios on visits to St Albans Fire Station in the coming weeks.

St Albans City and District Community Safety Partnership will be running Crucial Crew safety sessions for 1,100 children from more than 20 schools in the District.
The children aged 9-11 years-old will learn about fire hazards when they visit the Danger Den, a room set up to resemble a home. They will also take part in interactive sessions on how to store medicines safely and what to do if someone is drowning.
In addition, the pupils from Years Five and Six will learn about first aid and electrical, road, fire, water, firework and online safety.
They will also receive information about the effects of anti-social behaviour and bullying and how to deal with these situations if they are affected.
Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Engagement and Localism for St Albans City and District Council, said: “Crucial Crew is an innovative way of delivering personal and safety education messages through active participation in a range of scenarios. The sessions are designed to help encourage model behaviour and good citizenship and run for two weeks from 15 October.”
The sessions are being held at St Albans Fire Station in London Road and are being funded and run by the Community Safety Partnership (CSP). Students from Oaklands College will also help to run the sessions by delivering key messages and acting out role plays.
