St Albans City and District Council’s Cabinet has backed a proposal by Leisure Connection to introduce a leisure trust to run sports and leisure facilities in the District.
The Head of Community Services, in consultation with the Portfolio Holders for Resources and Sports, Leisure and Heritage, will now proceed with the proposal. The introduction of the leisure trust in the District will be dependent on commercial and legal formalities being agreed.
Cllr Mike Wakely, Portfolio Holder for Sports, Leisure and Heritage for St Albans City and District Council, said: “It is common for council-owned leisure facilities to be run in this way. The trust will deliver significant savings and help the Council maintain quality frontline services.”
On 18 October, Cabinet agreed in principle to the proposal. The leisure trust will result in savings for the Council each year as a result of tax efficiencies.
The Trust will include the following facilities that are currently managed by Leisure Connection:
• Alban Arena
• London Colney Recreation Centre
• Westminster Lodge outdoor sports facilities (including a track and golf course)
• Batchwood Gold and Leisure Centre
• Harpenden Leisure Centre
• Harpenden Pool
• Harpenden Public Halls
