On 18 October, St Albans City and District Council’s Cabinet agreed to award the contract to redevelop the site in Hunters Ride to the housing association.

The site is being redeveloped to provide one and two-bedroom flats for rented accommodation, subject to planning permission.

This is being carried out as part of the Council’s long-term programme to redevelop and refurbish sheltered housing schemes across the District.

The site will be transferred to North Hertfordshire Homes for the housing association to redevelop and manage, subject to contractual agreement. The Council will retain the right to nominate residents from the housing register to live at the development.

Councillor Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing for St Albans City and District Council, said: “The redevelopment of Victor Smith Court will provide much needed rented affordable housing. This is a key step forward in the Council’s programme to redevelop sheltered housing in the District.”

As part of this initiative, the former Eric Steele House has been transformed into modern older persons housing at Rosewood Court, Park Street.

The redevelopment was also carried out by North Hertfordshire Homes. Kevin
Thompson, Chief Executive for North Hertfordshire Homes, said: “This is excellent news. We have a successful track record of delivering a range of housing for St Albans City and District Council and we are very pleased to have been selected for the Victor Smith Court redevelopment. We look forward to working with the Council and residents in the coming months.”

In addition, planning permission has been granted to redevelop Leacroft in Harpenden. It will provide 21 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom flats, together with communal facilities, for older people with care needs.

A planning application has been submitted for the redevelopment of Caroline Sharpe House, St Albans into a flexi care scheme. A further planning application will also be submitted shortly for the refurbishment of The Grange, Colney Heath as affordable rented accommodation.

A webcast of the meeting on 18 October can be watched on the Council’s website.

The agenda and papers for the meeting is available on the Council’s website.
