The planting of the Atlas Cedar was arranged through the District’s Sponsor A Tree scheme which is managed by St Albans City and District Council in partnership with the Civic Society.

It is one of the first trees to be planted following the relaunch of the scheme last year in celebration of the Civic Society’s 50th anniversary.

The Sponsor a Tree scheme enables people to sponsor a tree in honour of a loved one, an organisation or an event.

Councillor Aislinn Lee, the Mayor of St Albans City and District, said: “I was delighted to be asked to plant the tree in memory of the four founding members of the Civic Society and to mark 50 years of the society’s work. The Sponsor A Tree scheme is a wonderful idea that gives people the opportunity to plant a tree in memory of a loved one or to mark a special occasion or anniversary and at the same time enhance the local environment.”

Joining the Mayor in planting the tree was Julian Trevelyan, the grandson of one of the founders of the Civic Society, Sir Geoffrey Trevelyan and son of the current Vice Chairman, Peter Trevelyan.

Eric Roberts, from the Civic Society said: “The tree is a fitting tribute to the work of the Civic Society and its founders in caring for the heritage, buildings and character of St Albans and will be here for generations to come. I hope that the tree planting will encourage people to come forward and to sponsor a tree.”

If you would like to sponsor a tree you can choose a location for its planting from a list of parks and green spaces around the District where trees are needed. The list is available on the Council’s website along with further information about the sponsorship scheme, including the types of trees you can sponsor.

A copy of the list of locations can also be requested by emailing treesandwoodlands@stalbans.gov.uk or by telephoning the Council’s Landscape and Trees Section on 01727 819363.

Leaflets about the Sponsor A Tree scheme are available from the Council’s offices in the Civic Centre, St Peter’s Street, St Albans or from the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall in Market Place, St Albans.

The cost of sponsoring a tree will vary depending upon the tree and suppliers’ prices at the time of ordering. An estimate can be given by contacting the Council’s Landscape and Trees Section on the number above.

If you wish, an artist commissioned by the Civic Society will create a dedicated page in the Tree Sponsorship book illustrating your chosen tree and including a short message or dedication at no extra cost. Selected pages of this book are displayed in a case in the reception area of the Council offices. Any new pages will be put onto the Council’s website (with your permission), so friends and family anywhere in the world can view them.
