Painted illustrations of trees sponsored by people in commemoration of their loved ones or an event have been created as part of the District’s Tree Sponsorship Scheme.

Six new illustrations will be added to the Tree Sponsorship Book which showcases trees sponsored in St Albans City and District through the scheme. The scheme is managed jointly by St Albans City and District Council and St Albans Civic Society.

The illustrations and the book are on display in the reception area of the Council’s offices at the Civic Centre in St Peter’s Street, St Albans.

The Civic Society commissioned St Albans calligrapher and artist Linda Williams to produce the artworks. Each one features a written dedication with a watercolour painting of blossom or leaves from the tree that has been sponsored.

Cllr Teresa Heritage, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Conservation for St Albans City and District Council, said: “The Tree Sponsorship Scheme is a wonderful way to mark a special occasion, such as an anniversary, or to honour a loved one. As part of the scheme, you can select a tree and choose a location from one of the Council’s parks across the District.”

Eric Roberts of the Civic Society said: “Sponsoring a tree through the scheme is a great way to celebrate an event or provide a lasting tribute to a loved one. The trees also help to make the District greener and a more attractive place.”

Anyone can sponsor a tree through the scheme. Further information about the scheme can be found on the Council’s website.

The cost of sponsoring a tree will vary depending upon the tree and suppliers’ prices at the time of ordering. A cost-estimate for the tree and a list of possible locations can be obtained from the Council’s Landscape and Trees Section on 01727 819363 or by emailing treesandwoodlands@stalbans.gov.uk .

Commemorative illustrations are offered to sponsors at no extra cost. Sponsors will be given the option for the illustrations to be displayed in the Tree Sponsorship Book in the reception area of the Council’s offices.  Illustrations can also be displayed on the Council’s website so that friends and relatives anywhere in the world can view them online.

Leaflets about the Tree Sponsorship Scheme are available from the Council’s offices or from the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall in Market Place, St Albans.
