Residents will be able to visit local attractions for free or try out new leisure activities and restaurants at a discount during St Albans City and District’s Residents First Weekend on 28 and 29 January 2012.
More than 40 of the District’s tourist attractions, hotels, leisure centres and restaurants will be taking part in the action-packed weekend, the tenth to be organised by St Albans City and District Council.
Full details of the many offers are contained in a leaflet which is available from participating venues and St Albans Tourist and Information Centre in Market Place, St Albans. The leaflet will also be inserted into the Herts Advertiser that is being published on 12 January.
Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism for St Albans City and District Council, said: “Residents First Weekend provides a brilliant opportunity for local residents to discover somewhere new on their doorstep and to take family and friends to see attractions across the District. I would like to thank all the venues which are taking part in this year’s event which offers a broad range of places to visit and activities and restaurants to try out.”
There are four ways you can make the most of the event:
Visit an attraction
Many of the District's top attractions will be opening their doors to visitors for free or are offering the opportunity to attend an event. Some of the highlights include a talk on the history of St Albans City Football Club; an opportunity to climb to the top of The Clock Tower in Market Place; a preview of Butterfly World ahead of its next opening in April; a chance to see inside St Albans South Signal Box; an opportunity to visit the studios at Radio Verulam and St Albans Talking Newspaper, and a chance to meet the restoration project team at Wheathampstead’s old railway station. The City and District of St Albans Tour Guides will also be hosting guided walks and re-enacting old trials in the 1830s court room at the Town Hall in Market Hall, St Albans.
Try out a new restaurant with Residents’ Feasts
Some of the most popular cafes and restaurants in the District will be offering meal deals over the weekend. For example, Bar Meze is offering 15% off the final bill, Freddie’s Restaurant a free starter with a main course, Thai Rack 20% off the final bill and St Michael’s Manor half a bottle of house wine per person when dining from the à la carte menu. The Residents First leaflet contains full details of these and other meal deals, many of which are subject to limitations for example as to time, place and the need to book ahead. Due to the popularity of the deals prior booking is recommended.
Try out a new activity
Leisure Connection, the Council’s arts, entertainment and sports facilities provider in the district, is offering deals on many activities. For example, there are great ticket offers for events at the Alban Arena and Harpenden Public Halls and a host of 2-for-1 offers on swimming, badminton, tennis and golf in the Council’s leisure centres around the district. There will also be the opportunity to hear some live music for free as part of the Guerrilla Gigs event organised on behalf of the Council by the SAASH* Arts Development Team.
Take part in the Residents’ Raffle
To be entered in the draw, fill in a Residents’ Questionnaire at the Residents First Information Point in the Town Hall in Market Place, St Albans or at one of the attractions open over the weekend. Prizes include afternoon tea for two at Harpenden House Hotel; dinner for two at the Quality Hotel, St Michael’s Manor or Sopwell House, or a chance to stay in one of five top hotels in the district.
How to Take Part in Residents First Weekend
To take advantage of the many offers available, simply show the Residents First leaflet to the participating venue. However, there are certain offers for which numbers are strictly limited, so you will need to pick up a voucher from the Residents First Information Point which is located in the Town Hall on Market Place, St Albans. The information point will be open on Saturday 28 January (9am - 4pm) and Sunday 29 January (10am - 4pm). For further details, please contact the Tourist and Information Centre on 01727 864511.
Details of the Residents First Weekend events are also available on the Council’s website.
