Celebrate St George’s Day by attending the Mayor of St Albans’ charity fundraising screening of Kenneth Branagh’s film Henry V on Sunday 23 April.

Henry V
Branagh directs and takes the title role in this film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s gritty play, being shown at the Abbey Theatre on the bard’s birthday.

The special evening screening will raise funds for Youth Talk and is hosted by the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Cllr Frances Leonard.

Shakespeare’s play focuses on Henry V of England’s determination to conquer parts of France. His impassioned speeches help boost the morale of England’s outnumbered army ahead of the bloody battle of Agincourt. Miraculously, England wins the battle and peace is secured with Henry V’s marriage to the French king’s daughter, Catherine de Valois, played by Emma Thompson.

The critically-acclaimed film has a star-studded cast that also includes Derek Jacobi, Robbie Coltrane, Judi Dench, Brian Blessed and Christian Bale.

The Mayor said: “Mark St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday by coming along to this screening of Branagh’s celebrated film adaptation of Henry V in aid of Youth Talk. This important charity provides a confidential counselling service for young people, aged 13 to 25, who live, work or receive education in St Albans District.”

Trevor Fromant, Chief Executive of Youth Talk said: “We are extremely grateful to have been chosen to receive the proceeds from the screening of the Mayor’s charity fundraising film. Currently Youth Talk is seeing around 50 young people each week and the money raised from this event will help fund the counselling sessions.”

The event starts at 6.30pm with a short talk about the play from Mr Jonathan Benjamin, who teaches English at St Albans High School for Girls.

Tickets cost £12 and include one free drink and substantial snacks before the screening as well as during the interval.
