We are committed to looking after our environment now and for future generations through our work on conservation and planning, by promoting careful development of mineral resources, and by increasing recycling and reducing landfill. We are also reducing environmental damage through efficient energy management and green travel initiatives.

Planning

St Albans City and District Council is a Local Planning Authority and has a duty to ensure that any new development of land and/or buildings undertaken in a sympathetic manner that protects residents' amenity and the environment. Town planning acts to control inappropriate developments and facilitate good schemes in the interest of the whole community.

Changes to planning regulations for homeowners
On 1 October 2008, the government introduced changes to the planning regulations, which extended Permitted Development rights. If you are extending or carrying out work to your home, you may no longer need to apply for planning permission. To find out about the changes to the rules, visit www.planningportal.gov.uk/house.
