Back in 1992, world leaders at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro signed a global environment and development action plan called Agenda 21. The aim of this plan was to halt and reverse environmental decay and promote the idea of a sustainable future. At present we are using resources faster than they are being replenished whilst continually creating waste and pollution. If this situation is not halted, future generations will inherit a world of little worth in terms of environmental diversity or social equity.
In order to address this situation Local Agenda 21 recognises the need to tackle not only the symptoms of environmental damage or social equity but the causes as well; it has four main areas:
decreasing the use of raw materials and energy.
reducing pollution and waste.
protecting fragile environments.
sharing wealth and responsibilities more fairly, considering the needs and rights of poor and disadvantaged.
To reflect this, the community and council of St Albans City and District formed their own Local Agenda 21 Forum. The Forum has over 160 different organisations and individuals involved in working together to provide a focus for activities that can bring about a positive change to the whole community. Why not become involved ?, by helping us to develop some Local Agenda 21 projects for your area. Remember the key is partnership - after all, it is everyone's future.
