We also link to the Planning Portal, which is part of the common vision for improving the planning process in England and Wales. The Planning Portal provides guidance and information about making planning applications, as well as resources for study and research.

The main parts of the Planning Portal are:

  • The Planning System – offers a brief introduction to the planning system and some explanation of what planning is for and why it is important. It is intended for both householders and business people and explains why planning controls are necessary and how decisions are made.

  • Make an application – will enable you to make an online application. The council welcomes applications submitted electronically using the portal. It is also possible to pay online and produce a site location plan to accompany your application.

  • Appeals – if you seek permission to carry out works to your property and your application isn't decided within a set period, or you get a decision from your local council that you disagree with, you have a right to appeal.

  • Interactive House/Terrace House - a visual guide for householders. Explore the interactive house for guidance on many common householder projects and whether or not planning permission is required.

  • Greener Homes and Microgeneration - guidance for householders on planing and building regulation matters for green energy projects and energy saving.

  • Building Work - find planning and building regulations guidance on many common projects in the home.

  • Building Regulations - a wide range of Building Regulations information and advice on how to apply for various types of common building work.

  • Site Plan Creator - you can buy a map here to support your planning application.

  • Frequently asked questions - access the Planning Portal's FAQ page here, which provides free, easily accessible advice to users.
