St Albans District has a rich heritage of historic buildings and areas.  Many of these structures are protected by being listed buildings. There are also several scheduled ancient monuments within the District.

St Albans conservation area

Where the Council seeks to preserve the distinctive character and appearance of an area, it designates a conservation area.  There are currently 18 throughout the District and these are protected through tighter planning controls, and various Article 4 Directions within these conservation areas give additional protection from unsympathetic change.

Protection also extends to trees in conservation areas and advice from the Trees and Woodlands Officer should be sought before carrying out any work.  Conservation areas may also coincide with areas of archaeological interest. More information is available from the District Archaeologist at swest@stalbans.gov.uk and the Council's Archaeology Strategy.
