Various products routinely used in the home are described as 'hazardous' for the purpose of disposal. Examples include weedkillers, pesticides and asbestos. Hazardous waste can not be disposed of with 'normal' household waste.
Disposal of hazardous household waste from the home requires specialist help and advice:
If you are in doubt about the safety of a product, or do not know how to safely dispose of it, then call the WasteAware helpline on 08457 425000.
Hertfordshire County Council provides a special collection and disposal service for small quantities of hazardous waste. This service is free of charge. Examples of hazardous household products include weedkillers, pesticides, solvents, glues, acids, preservatives and poisons.
Asbestos has to be disposed of at suitably licensed sites. It cannot be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres.
If you have small amounts of asbestos to dispose of from your home, Hertfordshire County Council will be able to advise you on its disposal. Ring the WasteAware helpline on 08457 425000.
If you have asbestos waste arising from works of construction and demolition nature (e.g. dismantling a garage roof) the Environment Agency will be able to advise you on its disposal. Ring the Environment Agency on 01707 632300. Alternatively see Yellow Pages for Removal Companies.
