Development of Homelessness Strategy 2008-2013

The Homelessness Act 2002 requires that Local Housing Authorities [LHA's] review amongst other things:

  1. The current and future level of homelessness in their area

  2. Activities undertaken in their area to:

  • Prevent homelessness

  • Secure that accommodation is available to homeless people

  • Provide support to homeless people

The aim is to make the prevention of homelessness a central activity. This means that we need to focus on helping clients to find the best solution to their housing problems before they become homeless.

The findings from our review are set out in a Homelessness Strategy spanning a five year period. Our Strategy for 2008 - 2013 sets out our key aims and priorities in relation to preventing homelessness and ensuring that clients have a range of housing options available to them.

Housing Strategy 2009-2012

St Albans Council has a number of responsibilities that are set out in the Homelessness Act 2002 and the Housing Act 2004.  We are also required to report annually on a number of housing related performance indicators.

The Housing Strategy sets out the steps we will take to address the housing issues facing St Albans.  It recognises our strengths and weaknesses, and includes an action plan which will allow us to set measurable goals and monitor their progress.
