Join in the Olympic celebrations when St Albans City and District plays host to the Olympic Flame on Sunday 8th July 2012 as part of the 8,000 mile London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route around the UK. 14 Torchbearers aged between 12 and 80 years will carry the Flame through St Albans.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of history. Everyone is invited to take part in the celebrations, share in the Olympic spirit and support our inspirational Torchbearers as they carry the Olympic Flame through the city.
The Olympic Flame will enter the District along Hatfield Road at 4.06pm on Sunday 8th July. The Flame will be carried by Torchbearers along the length of Hatfield Road from its junction with Charlotte Close, crossing over St Peters Street into Catherine Street, along Folly Lane joining Verulam Road down towards Oysterfields. From here the Flame will be placed back inside the convoy as it travels into Hemel Hempstead via Bluehouse Hill and Hemel Hempstead Road.

Join us in lining the streets on 8th July to welcome the Olympic Flame. The eyes of the world will be on us. This is our moment to shine.
Road Closures on 8th July 2012
There will be rolling road closures in place along the Olympic Torch Relay Route on Sunday 8th July. Rolling road closures allow the traffic to flow as normal until just before the Torch Convoys arrive when the traffic is then held until it passes through. There will therefore be a delay along the roads near the route as the torch arrives and travels through St Albans. Roads elsewhere in St Albans (not on or directly near the route) will be open as normal and not affected by the rolling road closure. However there may be slight delays due to an increase in the volume of traffic. We therefore advise that you give extra time for your journeys.
As both the Activation Convoy and Flame Convoys come through St Albans these rolling road closures will precede them approximately 10-15 minutes before the first convoy arrives. There will be a 5-7 minute gap between the 2 convoys and the roads may be opened in this time if it is safe to do so. The roads will be open to traffic as normal immediately after the convoy has passed.
If you are a pedestrian: please be vigilant along the Torch Relay route as traffic will still be moving as normal 10-15 mins prior to the first convoy, possibly during the 5-7 minutes gap between Activation and Flame convoys and immediately after the convoys have passed through areas.
If you are a driver/cyclist: Please be patient as delays are expected as the Activation and Flame convoys travel through St Albans and be extra vigilant of pedestrians that may have been spectating at the event.
Please note: Redbourn Road will not be closed on Monday 9th July. The signs that are currently in place are pre-warning people that Dunstable High Street (A5) will be closed on Monday 9th July due to the Olympic Torch Relay.
