This is a very complicated project which covers a large area with many constraints and opportunities. It will therefore take some time to determine what the optimal solution is, obtain the required permissions and secure funding. However, this will ensure that funds are spent wisely and we achieve the best possible outcomes which will be sustainable in the long term.

We are currently carrying out a detailed feasibility study which will assess what options there are to improve the river and lakes, the likely impacts and the costs involved. We will use this study to develop options that meet our objectives, are feasible and offer value for money.

Due to the complexity of the project, the feasibility and options stage is taking longer than we hoped. We are currently waiting on the results of the hydraulic modelling, which is how we understand what the level and flows of the river will be for the different options we are considering. Once we have this, we can narrow down the possible options to those that meet the project objectives. After this, we will begin to share this information in line with our engagement process.

We have been working together on this project since October 2016. Whilst we would all like to see drastic action happening quickly, the issues with the lakes are substantial and will be very costly to put right. It will therefore take some time to determine what the optimal solution is, obtain the required permissions and secure funding. However, this will ensure that funds are spent wisely and we achieve the best possible outcomes which will be sustainable in the long term.

We are hoping to be able to share the proposals for the improvements towards the end of this year. We will then seek funding to progress and implement the preferred solutions.
