Start the New Year with a step in the right direction and get walking!
If your over-indulged at Christmas and you want a New Year resolution that you can actually stick to, why not start walking?
The Countryside Management Service co-ordinates a popular county-wide programme of short, regular walks called the Hertfordshire Health Walks. Health Walks are group walks, led by trained volunteers and graded to suit all fitness levels and abilities. They are a great way of meeting new people, getting outside and feeling the many benefits of walking. As well as being a good way to maintain general wellbeing, these benefits include helping reduce the risk of conditions such as diabetes, alzheimers and bowel cancer and can even help prevent osteoporosis, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease.
To add to all that, Health Walks are all free, easy to fit into your existing routine and with most of them finishing at a pub or cafe you can reward yourself with a well earned cup of tea! As one regular health walker, Janet, puts in, "In the days of the credit crunch what can be better than a good walk followed by a cup of tea-good for us and our wallet!"
