The Hertfordshire Youth Games brings together over 1000 young sports people to compete for the ten districts/boroughs that make up Hertfordshire. It's a great opportunity for them to try a new sport, join a local club and represent the City and District of St Albans.
Team St Albans Needs You!
The annual Herts Youth Games will be taking place on Sunday 8th July at the Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield. We are calling on all children from age 7-19 years to take part in the Games. What happened in 2011?
After trials and 8 weeks of training the selected teams arrived at the Hertfordshire Sports Village to represent Team St Albans. The athletes represented St Albans in their Royal Blue kit and competed against the 9 other Districts and Boroughs across Hertfordshire in a total of 8 different sports; Aquathlon (running and swimming), Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Table Tennis and Sports Hall Athletics.
The outside events were met with heavy downpours throughout the day but this did not stop the competitiveness and enjoyment of the young people. A highlight for Team St Albans was in the Under 9's Girls Football where the team found themselves taking part in a nerve racking penalty shootout in the 3rd and 4th place match, to finally be awarded 3rd place.
Although the inside events did not suffer the weather the competitiveness matched what was happening outside. Team St Albans performed very well throughout and no winner had been decided until the last event. Team St Albans were victorious in the Boys Basketball winning the final with a comfortable score of 28-0.
After all the results were collated Team East Herts were crowned as the overall winners with a total of 49 points. St Albans managed to narrowly beat Hertsmere to second place. This was an excellent result for the Team as the majority of athletes had not played the sports before the 8 weeks of training started leading up to the Games. A large number of athletes have now carried on with the sports in the clubs they trained with.
All the athletes that took part should be very proud of all the hard work an effort they put into their training and during the Games themselves. They were all a huge credit to the City and District of St Albans. A huge thank you goes to all the coaches and volunteers for all their efforts and support given to Team St Albans for this year's Herts Youth Games; it would not have been possible without them.
