The Maltings Arts Theatre is an intimate venue which receives a wide variety of touring professional theatre companies. Our programme consists of diverse events such as adaptations of classic novels, the Pick of the Fringe shows, Shakespeare, Commedia del Arte, cutting edge modern plays, physical theatre and comedy shows. Quite a repertoire!

Our cafe is open all day and its pleasant, relaxed atmosphere is a haven where people can chat over a coffee and a cake, or a sandwich, or just watch the world go by. The Theatre Box Office is open from 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Our Wednesday lunchtime music slot includes a mixture of light classical solo artists, duos or trios and jazz ensembles. There is also the occasional lunchtime lecture. It is popular for our customers to go shopping at St Albans market and then round off their day with relaxing music at the theatre and a light lunch from The Barn Door - our cafe/bar.

Once a month we have the Red Note Jazz Club where we re-create a jazz cafe feel in the auditorium and the audience is entertained with different styles including jazz, blues and world music.

We have an extremely popular Saturday children's theatre drawing on the best touring productions. The stories range from traditional fables to popular modern tales using song, dance, mask and puppetry. Throughout the week we offer a variety of drama and art classes for young people from the age of 5 to 16.
