About Verulamium park

Set in over 100 acres of beautiful parkland, Verulamium park, purchased from the Earl of Verulam in 1929 by the then City Corporation, is a popular attraction throughout the year.

Named after the Roman City of Verulamium on which it stands, the City walls and outline of the main London Gate can still be seen. Visit Verulamium Museum with its hands on discovery areas and hundreds of remarkable objects and learn about everyday Roman life in this major Roman City.

A main feature of the Park is the ornamental lake. Construction started on this project during 1929 and gave much needed work to the unemployed during the depression.

Take a leisurely stroll around the lake or alongside the River Ver. The lake is home to a wealth of waterbirds including Great Crested Grebes, Coot, Pochard and Tufted Duck. The islands in the lake support one of the few heronries in Hertfordshire whilst on the River Ver you may be lucky enough to see a Water Vole.

In addition to the lake and river, wildlife habitat is enhanced through the use of trees and meadows, important for insects and birds.

From the park admire the magnificent view of the Cathedral and Abbey Church built on the site of St Albans execution.

Verulamium also plays host to a number of special events including St Albans Carnival during August Bank Holiday and the annual Firework Display in November.

The football pitches, basketball/netball and tennis courts situated within the Park always prove a popular attraction whilst Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre caters for a variety of leisure activities including swimming, fitness classes and golf.

For younger visitors there is a Toddler Splash Park, play area and crazy golf. A crèche at Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre operates throughout the year.

Refreshments are available at the 'Inn on the Park ' where you can purchase snacks to eat in and take away or at the Cafeteria situated within Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre.
