Colney Heath-Boissy Twinning Association

BOISSY & ST YON, FRANCE

Colney Heath has been twinned with Boissy and St Yon for several years. Boissy is about twenty miles south of Paris, in the department of Essone, and has a similar size population to that of Colney Heath. The smaller village of St Yon is very close by. Both communities are surrounded by arable land, but many of the local residents commute to work. The square in Boissy is dominated by the Maire and also contains a large church and several small shops. There are many sports and social activities there, with clubs for all ages including cycling, boules, moving images, Esperanto, twinning and mushroom growing!

Friendship Association

The objectives of the association are to establish and maintain family friendships in both communities and to encourage an interest and appreciation of the French lifestyle, particularly in school age children.

Twinning Reports

The Association's main activity is an annual reunion between friends in the two communities, which is held alternatively in Colney Heath and Boissy, usually around the Easter or Spring Bank Holiday weekends. Fund raising and social events are held throughout the year, these include dinner dances, quiz nights, barbecues and boules competitions. There are a number of events still to be held this year. Please contact the officers of the Association above for further details.

Twinning visit to Colney Heath 25-28 May 2007

The coach bearing our French guests arrived on time at 5.30pm on Friday the 25th May. The guests were collected by their hosts and whisked away to be fed and rested. Saturday was a day free for the hosts to show their guests around local attractions particularly St Albans market and shops along with historical sites.

On Saturday evening a gala dinner dance was held to celebrate our 25 years of twinning. De Havilland sports and social club was the venue and the University catering team provided an excellent meal. The group LA Nights provided music until 12.30am and David Tompkins the magician did the rounds of tables amazing all with his skill. A cake was cut and speeches made with our chair person saying that it was hoped French was going to be the subject taught in the village school from next year and that this may well bring new members.

Our Sunday a coach trip to Ely was a very damp affair as it rained all day long but at least spirits were not dampened as many planned barbeques still took place with food being cooked in garages and under parasols.

Monday morning brought departure and sad goodbyes but promises to meet again next year in Boissy sous St Yon.
