Can we help you with your Council Tax Bill?

Please have a look at the table below to see if you may qualify for help with your Council Tax bill.

  • Firstly find the column that represents the Council Tax band for your home. The band is shown on your Council Tax bill.
  • Find the description on the left hand side, which best describes your circumstances.
  • Find where the column and the row meet.
  • If your weekly income is BELOW this amount you may qualify for help with your Council Tax bill.
  • If you are disabled or a carer you could still be entitled, even if your income is higher

This is only a guide. Your Council Tax charge or your circumstances may not be exactly the same as these examples. There are also certain types of income that are ignored in the calculation of benefit, these include Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance. If you are employed, we count your gross pay, less tax and National Insurance contributions.

If you think we might be able to help you, you will need to complete a claim form

  • You can call us on 01727 866100 (ask for the Benefits Service) and we will send you a form
  • You can leave your name and full address requesting a form on our answerphone, call 01727 819460
  • You can contact us on 01727 819403 for an initial telephone assessment - we will ask you a few questions and send you a form to complete if from your answers we think that you may get some help
  • You can email your request to us at benefits@stalbans.gov.uk
  • You can download an application form
  • You can submit your details via the online eform

If you have over £16,000 in savings we cannot help you (unless you are receiving Pension Credit - Guarantee Credit).
Your entitlement may also be reduced if you have other people living in your home.
