  * Be part of the solution on climate change - Carbon Management Consultation Strategy

Members of the community are being asked to help the council reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the district as an important step to tackle climate change.

Following the signing of the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change at the council's environmental conference last year, the council has drawn up a Carbon Management Strategy and action plan setting out what it plans to do to meet its pledge.

The draft strategy is divided into nine themes ranging from water and green travel to energy and recycling. The document also poses a number of questions such as what climate change issues should we be prioritising, at what level should we set our carbon reduction target and what do you think would encourage householders to recycle.

The document can be viewed and downloaded below. Comments can be sent by e-mail to sustainability@stalbans.gov.uk or posted to The Sustainability Team, District Council Offices, St Peter's Street, St Albans AL1 3JE. Hard copies of the document are available by telephoning the council offices on 01727 819455

All returned comments will be entered into a free prize draw in win a range of eco friendly products. So don't miss out and get your comments back to us!

The deadline for comments is 15th October 2007.

  * A Sustainable Future

All Working Toward Tomorrow

Back in 1992, world leaders at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro signed a global environment and development action plan called Agenda 21. The aim of this plan was to halt and reverse environmental decay and promote the idea of a sustainable future. At present we are using resources faster than they are being replenished whilst continually creating waste and pollution. If this situation is not halted, future generations will inherit a world of little worth in terms of environmental diversity or social equity.

In order to address this situation Local Agenda 21 recognises the need to tackle not only the symptoms of environmental damage or social equity but the causes as well; it has four main areas:

  • decreasing the use of raw materials and energy.
  • reducing pollution and waste.
  • protecting fragile environments.
  • sharing wealth and responsibilities more fairly, considering the needs and rights of poor and disadvantaged.

To reflect this, the community and council of St Albans City and District formed their own Local Agenda 21 Forum. The Forum has over 160 different organisations and individuals involved in working together to provide a focus for activities that can bring about a positive change to the whole community. Why not become involved ?, by helping us to develop some Local Agenda 21 projects for your area. Contact the Council's Environmental Resource Officer, on 01727 866100, for further details on Local Agenda 21 visit http://www.la21-uk.org.uk

Remember the key is partnership - after all, it is everyone's future.
