Approximately 2.4 million children and young people in the
UK aged 14 and under will visit a hospital accident and emergency
department as the result of an accident this year. The information
provided on this sheet will help you identify potential dangers
faced by children and give you advice for protecting your
children.
Attached is just one in a series of Environmental Health
Promotion Displays that can be viewed in full colour on this
website and on display boards throughout the community. The
intention of these displays is to provide up-to-date and reliable
information on various health issues to help improve the health
and well-being of you and your family.

This initiative was conceived by the Environmental
Health Training Consortium, EHTC, (consisting of Health Promotion
Officers from East Hertfordshire, St Albans City & District
and Welwyn Hatfield Council's) following feedback from Health
Visitors during accident prevention training. The aim of the
initiative is to facilitate the discussion of accident prevention
issues between health visitors and families of pre-school
children in a non-judgemental manner.
Three Health Promotion Officers that form the EHTC developed,
designed and arranged the printing of 250,000 leaflets (60,000
leaflets per year distributed over four years; approximately
15,000 in each age group) for use over a four year period.
The project was funded by Hertfordshire Health Authority and
Hertfordshire Health Promotion facilitated the distribution
and evaluation.
A set of four leaflets have been produced to correspond with
the child's development at birth and subsequent developmental
check stages. They are delivered personally by every health
visitor at the developmental checks in Hertfordshire over
a four year period; Birth to eight months in 'You and Your
Baby' Eight months to two years in 'You and Your Toddler'
Two to three years in 'Better and Faster' Three to five years
in 'Growing up Fast' Set of five posters for use by health
visitors and at Child Safety events.
